What is a dental implant?

dental implant A dental implant is a tiny titanium threaded cylinder similar to a screw, which is placed (screwed) into the jawbones. The implantation is performed under local anesthesia and the procedure is painless. The most disturbing is just the local anesthesia. Procedure of an implant placement lasts about 20 minutes. After the surgery, implants are closed with cover screws and let heal for 2 to 3 months. Following this period, implants are firmly healed (accepted) by surrounding bone.

dental implanty The cover screw is replaced for a prosthodontic abutment. The abutment looks like a ground tooth and could be made either from titanium, aluminium oxide, or zirconium. A crown or a bridge is cemented on the abutments. In special situations, it is possible to joint a bridge together with implants the day of implant placement. We prefer the so-called immediate loading in the situations where a couple of implants are placed. The temporary bridge is fixed and replaced for the final one after about 3 to 4 months.
